Position Summary

Accountable.US seeks two Opposition Research and Communications Fellows to support its work to root out corruption and malfeasance and introduce them to the fields of progressive opposition research and communications.

Over the course of six months, Fellows will have 2, three-month rotations between our Research and Communications teams to provide a better understanding of these fields and how to pursue a career in each. They will also choose to focus on the issue area that best matches their interests: Economic Security & Corporate Power; Energy & Environment; Corporate Values & Democracy; or Power & Influence. .

The Fellows will be responsible for providing research, media relations, and digital support to Accountable.US’s various projects throughout the program. The position is based in Washington, D.C. or fully remote. (If remote, Accountable.US will sponsor one trip to Washington, D.C. for Fellows to meet with staff and participate in in-person networking opportunities.) A willingness to learn, flexible personality, sense of humor, and positive attitude are important.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Provide support on a rotating schedule to communications (3 months) and research (3 months) teams.
  • Work as part of a team to produce research reports on issues related to corporate and government accountability, economic fairness, conservation, and extremism.
  • Provide support for various administrative and internal tasks needed to keep Accountable.US’s day-to-day running, such as: media monitoring, daily bullets, background documents, and other tasks as requested.
  • Independently monitor relevant news to identify opportunities for Accountable.US to engage.
  • Assist in pitching larger research and communications products.
  • Draft and follow up on public records requests, as well as analyze the results of these requests.
  • Work with the communications team to draft press releases, reporter notes, pitches, and pre-interview briefing documents.
  • Maintain and update internal press lists and update communications trackers.
  • Write, review, edit, and update content for company websites, social media channels, and internal digital reports.
  • Work with digital team to craft and execute content strategy and ideas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Experience in research, media relations, digital or related field. This could include relevant classwork, study abroad, clubs, internships in political advocacy, campaign or public policy research, and/or experience on Capitol Hill or in government;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently and juggle competing priorities and strict deadlines;
  • Comfort being flexible in work priorities and jumping on rapid response efforts when necessary;
  • Sound judgment and discerning eye;
  • Proven track record of being a self-starter;
  • Immaculate attention to detail;
  • Commitment to government and corporate accountability; and
  • Demonstrates an interest in and ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Compensation, Benefits, and Other Details

Fellows are paid at a rate of $18.00 per hour along with a competitive benefits package. This is a temporary, 6-month position from June 2023 through December 2023.
